感知集体连续性对传统文化传承意愿的影响
Perceived Collective Continuity Predicts Enhanced Willingness to Inherit Traditional Culture: The Mediating Role of Awe in Culture
文化传承是文明延续的重要载体,有助于社会文化的发展进步。研究通过五个递进的子研究探索了感知集体连续性对传统文化传承意愿的影响。结果发现: 感知集体连续性促进了传统文化传承意愿(研究1a、1b和2),且文化敬畏在感知集体连续性和传统文化传承意愿之间起到中介作用(研究3和4),即感知集体连续性会催生出对文化的敬畏感,进而促进传统文化传承意愿。研究结果扩展了对感知集体连续性下游效应的理解,揭示了其情绪机制。同时,对传统文化传承心理前因的探索有助于为文化发展策略提供理论参考,推动文化自信的树立。
Cultural inheritance is recognized as an essential element of traditional cultures, encompassing the intergenerational transmission of core values, norms, and traditions. It contributes to the formation of national consciousness and creative adaptation of cultural elements, which are both crucial for societal progress and the ongoing development of civilization. With the increasing globalization and modernization of today, there is an urgent need to look into the factors contributing to sustainable cultural inheritance to prevent the loss of valuable cultural elements and foster greater cultural adaptations and preservations among future generations. Hence, the present study focuses on the psychological antecedents of one’s willingness to engage in cultural inheritance. We explored whether perceived collective continuity would lead to willingness to inherit traditional culture, and how it influences cultural inheritance intentions through the potential mediating role of awe in one’s culture.
The current study consists of five sub-studies, with a total of 1,324 Chinese participants. Study 1a (N = 317) employed a cross-sectional survey method to examine the correlational relationship between perceived collective continuity and the willingness to inherit traditional culture among university students. Employing a similar cross-sectional design, Study 1b(N = 475)further tested the correlational relationship between parents’ perceived collective continuity and their willingness to transfer traditions directed towards their children. Aiming to demonstrate the causal relationship between the aforementioned variables, Study 2(N= 185)employed a single-factor, two-level experimental design to examine whether induced perceived collective continuity leads to intentions for cultural inheritance. Using cross-sectional survey and experimental methods, Studies 3(N= 185)and 4(N= 162)tested the mediating role of awe in culture in the relationship between perceived collective continuity and the willingness to inherit traditional culture.
The results across these studies consistently indicated that perceived collective continuity positively predicts the willingness to inherit traditional culture. Moreover, the effect of perceived collective continuity on willingness to inherit traditional culture was found to be mediated by awe in culture. Specifically, Study 1a revealed a positive correlation between perceived collective continuity and the general willingness to inherit traditional culture among university students. Study 1b showed that perceived collective continuity among parents is positively correlated with both general and specific willingness to transfer traditions directed towards their children. The causal link between perceived collective continuity and willingness to inherit traditional culture is empirically supported by Study 2. Furthermore, Study 3 found that experiencing awe in culture mediated the relationship between perceived collective continuity and the willingness to inherit traditional culture. Specifically, perceived cultural and historical continuity predicted an enhanced sense of awe in culture, which in turn predicted increased willingness to engage in traditional inheritance-related activities. Study 4 replicated the main findings of Studies 1 to 3, and found that induced perceived collective continuity promoted both general and specific willingness for cultural inheritance. Interestingly, awe in culture was found to mediate the relationship between perceived collective continuity and general willingness to inherit traditional culture but not specific willingness to inherit traditional culture.
This study not only elucidates the specific socioemotional mechanisms that could foster willingness to inherit traditional culture, but also broadens our understanding of the prosocial effects of awe in a cultural context. It extends examination of awe subtypes beyond nature-related experiences and further explores the effects of perceived collective continuity, expanding this area of research from the intergroup-related domain to the cultural domain. Integrating these psychological insights into the framework of cultural transmission offers valuable theoretical contributions to the understanding of cultural sustainability. Furthermore, this research contributes to practical implications for policymakers and educators in better preserving and revitalizing traditional culture to enrich the lives of future generations.
In summary, the present research found that individuals’ perceptions of cultural and historical continuity predict greater intentions to engage in activities related to the inheritance of traditional culture, and this predictive relationship is mediated by individuals’ experiences of awe in culture.

This preliminary study compared the associations between objective and subjective socioeconomic status (SES) with psychological and physical variables among 157 healthy White women, 59 of whom subsequently participated in a laboratory stress study. Compared with objective indicators, subjective social status was more consistently and strongly related to psychological functioning and health-related factors (self-rated health, heart rate, sleep latency, body fat distribution, and cortisol habituation to repeated stress). Most associations remained significant even after controlling for objective social status and negative affectivity. Results suggest that, in this sample with a moderately restricted range on SES and health, psychological perceptions of social status may be contributing to the SES-health gradient.

Lack of careful consideration of common method effects in empirical research can lead to several negative consequences for the interpretation of research outcomes, such as biased estimates of the validity and reliability of the measures employed as well as bias in the estimates of the relationships between constructs of interest, which in turn can affect hypothesis testing. Taken together, these make it very difficult to make any interpretations of the results when those are affected by substantive common method effects. In the literature, there are several preventive, detective, and corrective techniques that can be employed to assuage concerns about the possibility of common method effects underlying observed results. Among these, the most popular has been Harman's Single-Factor Test. Though researchers have argued against its effectiveness in the past, the technique has continued to be very popular in the discipline. Moreover, there is a dearth of empirical evidence on the actual effectiveness of the technique, which we sought to remedy with this research. Our results, based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations, indicate that the approach shows limited effectiveness in detecting the presence of common method effects and may thus be providing a false sense of security to researchers. We therefore argue against the use of the technique moving forward and provide evidence to support our position.

Awe has been theorized as a collective emotion, one that enables individuals to integrate into social collectives. In keeping with this theorizing, we propose that awe diminishes the sense of self and shifts attention away from individual interests and concerns. In testing this hypothesis across 6 studies (N = 2137), we first validate pictorial and verbal measures of the small self; we then document that daily, in vivo, and lab experiences of awe, but not other positive emotions, diminish the sense of the self. These findings were observed across collectivist and individualistic cultures, but also varied across cultures in magnitude and content. Evidence from the last 2 studies showed that the influence of awe upon the small self accounted for increases in collective engagement, fitting with claims that awe promotes integration into social groups. Discussion focused on how the small self might mediate the effects of awe on collective cognition and behavior, the need to study more negatively valenced varieties of awe, and other potential cultural variations of the small self. A large body of anthropological and psychological research on emotions has yielded significant evidence that emotional experience is culturally constructed: people more commonly experience those emotions that help them to be a good and typical person in their culture. Moreover, experiencing these culturally normative emotions is associated with greater well-being. In this review, we summarize recent research showing how emotions are actively constructed to meet the demands of the respective cultural environment; we discuss collective as well as individual processes of construction. By focusing on cultural construction of emotion, we shift the focus toward how people from different cultures 'do' emotions and away from which emotions they 'have'.Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Cultural inheritance refers to the storage and transmission of information by communication, imitation, teaching and learning. It is transmitted by the brain rather than by genes. However, it does have a genetic basis, the genes involved determining the structure of the brain. Cultural inheritance is considered to be the latest stage in the evolution of heredity. It is thought to have evolved by epigenetic mechanisms from genetic inheritance. This article proposes that cultural inheritance underlies normal behaviour and mental disorders.

Awe is considered a transformational and multifaceted emotion. Vastness is the core cognitive appraisal associated with awe, which activates a need for cognitive accommodation. Increasingly, studies are evaluating awe’s dimensions including triggers, cognitive and emotional characteristics, and primarily beneficial outcomes. Additionally, numerous emotions have been conceptualised within a cognitive behavioural framework and cognitive behavioural models may be utilised to promote positive human qualities and experiences. Therefore, this paper outlines the results of a systematic review of the literature on awe from a cognitive behavioural perspective to propose a cognitive behavioural model. Databases searched included Psych Net, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, EBSCO, SAGE, JSTOR, Springer LINK, Taylor and Francis, and Wiley with the inclusion of peer reviewed articles. A total of 57 studies were identified. Triggers of awe were primarily related to nature and cognitive processes centred on vastness and the need for accommodation. A range of outcomes associated with awe were identified including increased well-being, spiritual growth, and pro-environmental intent. The key findings from this review informed a cognitive behavioural model of awe. Such a cognitive behavioural model may inform the cultivation of awe for individual, community, or environmental well-being and experience design. Future research is required to validate the proposed model, proposed pathways, and utility.

In this article we review the emerging literature on the self-transcendent emotions. We discuss how the self-transcendent emotions differ from other positive emotions and outline the defining features of this category. We then provide an analysis of three specific self-transcendent emotions—compassion, gratitude, and awe—detailing what has been learned about their expressive behavior, physiology, and likely evolutionary origins. We propose that these emotions emerged to help humans solve unique problems related to caretaking, cooperation, and group coordination in social interactions. In our final section we offer predictions about the self-transcendent emotions that can guide future research.

Parental tradition transfer to children is pivotal for their socialization, identity formation, and culture perpetuation. But what motivates parents to transfer traditions to their children? We hypothesized that nostalgia, an emotion strengthening interpersonal bonds, would promote tradition transfer through parent-child relationship closeness. We tested these hypotheses using cross-sectional (Studies 1 and 4), cross-lagged (Study 2 and preregistered Study 5), and experimental (Studies 3 and 6) designs. In Studies 1 to 3, nostalgia was associated with, had lagged effect on, and promoted tradition transfer. In Studies 4–6, parent-child relationship closeness mediated the link between nostalgia and tradition transfer. The findings enrich our understanding of the vertical transmission of knowledge, customs, and values, offering insight into how intergenerational bonds are reinforced and cultural heritage is maintained.
