Abstract

Abstract: GO styles refer to the consistent and steady ways and characteristics manifested by the player in the game of GO. The analyses of exploratory factors and confirmatory factors in our prior studies lead to 5 factors (dimensions) for GO style structure: rigorousness and steadiness, swiftness and level-headedness, bellicosity and aggressiveness, global perspective, and hesitation and forbearance. Of all the five factors, global perspective has something to do with space. However, objective evidence is needed to confirm the existence of these factors (dimensions). This paper aims to explore the physiological evidence for the global perspective dimensions of GO styles by using Model 1.5T fMRI instrument in between-subjects design experiment in which three scenes from the layout stage of the GO game are used. The subjects are the amateur Go players recruited publicly among college students who are tested by means of questionnaire of Go styles(GSQ). The result of survey leads to two groups of players: five players of high grade group of global perspective and five players of low grade group of global perspective. The following are characteristic of the three scenes from the layout stage of the GO game used in the experiment: they are easy to understand; there are no correct ways to play in the game of Go; they are not designed to test the level of the players. The reason why the experiment is so designed is that the players of different styles are capable of giving full play to their ability to play the game. The brain activation areas are recorded and compared in which two groups of amateur players of different styles are thinking in the game of Go. The result in the experiment shows that there is a clear difference in the brain activation areas between the two groups of players. When the players from the high grade group of global perspective are thinking in the game of GO, some Brodmann areas of the right cerebrum are activated, such as Right-BA1, Right-BA6, Right-BA17, Right-BA19; when the players from the low grade group are thinking, some Brodmann areas of the right cerebrum and the left cerebrum are activated, such as Left-BA7, Left-BA9, Right-BA25, Right-BA37, Right-BA46, Left-BA47. The findings suggest that the difference in the brain activation areas between the two groups of amateur Go players has provided the physiological evidence for GO style dimensions of the global perspective. The new idea brought forth in the study of this paper lies in that the fMRI technique has been used to explore the physiological evidence of GO styles.
